Anxieties of an Immigrant Father

Charcoal and mixed media on paper, 24” x 18”, 2022

Anxieties of an Immigrant Father is a series of five charts that map my current and future anxieties about being an immigrant parent. Addressed to my daughter, it utilizes a mix of humor and personal history to examine issues of identity, oppression, assimilation and colonial baggage. The anxieties rise and fall based on my daughter’s age as I make assumptions about whether something will make me less or more anxious in the future. When all five charts are viewed together, the series reveals a narrative of increasing unease and distress.
